Consumer Electronics

The market in consumer electronics has opened up so much in recent decades that it is now one of the biggest industries in the world.  For a market that hardly existed 50 years ago it is truly incredible how important electronic gadgets have become in people's lives.  Consumer electronics include any electronic equipment that is meant for everyday use, whether for entertainment, communications or in the office.  The number of these items that are now in circulation in the western world is huge and is growing bigger every day.

The history of the consumer electronics industry began in the 1920s with radios and electronic phonographs going on the market.  This continued as the years went on and in the 1950s we say the transistor enter the shops followed by the integrated circuit in the 1960s.  It was only at the end of the 20th century however that the variety and scale of the electronics industry made it such a dominant sector of the global marketplace like it is today.

Televisions, video recorders, DVDs, fax machines, GPS devices, video games systems, not to mention desktop and laptop computers have changed the way that we live our lives.  This is quite a big statement but is a completely valid one when we see how often people use their consumer technology and how crucial it has become for such important tasks as communication, entertainment, navigation and much more.  Digital signal processing has played a big part in this electronic consumer revolution as well as it has increased the transmission rate and storage capacity of the electronic signals that much of this technology requires.

A recent trend in modern electronics involves the convergence of electronic items together into singular electronic interfaces.  Mobile phones are the obvious example of this trend and now include music players and cameras almost as standard.  This trend is sure to continue with products now on the marketplace that combine small computers with GPS technology, media playing capabilities and communications software.

The other main reason that consumer electronics have become so popular is because at the same time that the technology has been getting better the prices have also been falling sharply.  Because of new and improved technological discoveries and lower production costs all electronics without exception have been dropping in price.  This lowering of production costs is due to both improved automation in the manufacturing process and the lower labour costs that have become available due to globalisation.

Consumer electronics have become an integral part of so many peoples lives, indeed you would not be reading this article now if you did not have access to a personal computer and a way to access the Internet.  Technological discoveries have always had an effect on the evolution of humanity, and this is as true today as it ever has been before.  Never before in our history have so many technological developments become so linked with our everyday lives in such a quick time frame.  The only question left is what exactly can we achieve with this technology.
